If three people with a stomach ache go to a doctor, they may get three different recommendations to deal with it. But even more important to note is that the cause of the stomach ache may be unique to each person. This reality might dictate if the medicine or cure would be different for each or not. As we know, sometimes the cure for a problem will be the same regardless of its origin.
One person might have a stomach ache due to poor eating habits. Another might have a stomach ache due to lack of exercise and the inability to digest even healthy food if they have an allergy to it. Another person might have a stomach ache due to nerves, their emotional state and have nothing to do with food.
The same situations can exist with Feng Shui, as in the same problem but for different reasons. Take the example of financial problems. In Feng Shui theory, we recognize that an occupant's financial struggles could have to do with qi flow (air currents and energy flow based on the floor plan lay out.) This could include poorly placed doors, windows, stairs and other architectural flaws. These physical features can move energy too quickly in and out of a structure based on their placement. The trickle down effect may be a kind of "leaking" where the house cannot hold its qi. This is where we many have to resort to "band-aid" remedies to over compensate with d�cor adjustments to manipulate qi flow.
Another source for the same result of financial problems might have to do with timing. We might be looking at a normally good house or business location that happens to be in a bad phase in terms of annual cycles or other timing considerations. For example, houses which were built between 1964 through 1983 that are facing west are currently in a long-term phase that can undermine financial luck of occupants until 2024. It is nothing we see with the eyes, rather an aspect to timing.
Yet another cause for financial problems might be how the person uses a room, what direction they sleep, how they are seated at their work desk, and a variety of determinations as to whether or not the individual is personally compatible with their own space or not.
Finally, we can even look to the outside natural environment and man-made exteriors to be a partial culprit in undermining a person's financial potential. For example, we live in an age known as Period 8. Period 8 began in 2004 and will continue until 2024. One exterior feature to be aware of is that during Period 8, the relative placement of outside water to the northeast of a structure can be very damaging. This could be a pool or a fountain to the northeast of a house, relative to the center of the house. The span of magnetic northeast is from 22.5 degrees to 67.5 degrees.
Fortunately, most classically trained Feng Shui consultants will have a whole cache of recommendations and counter-measures to apply and recommend in order to balance the flawed interiors and exteriors. No one should worry that one flaw or area of "compromised" Feng Shui will completely undue their financial luck.

Hang a family photo on the east wall to promote togetherness and a picture of a body of water on the north wall to enhance your career advancement; viewing uplifting photographs and artwork will make you smile each time you see them.
Mirrors, too, are great for chi, but there are several rules about them. Never place a mirror opposite the door. It is believed the chi will escape through it. Also, never have a mirror reflect a bathroom, kitchen, or staircase.
You don't to go crazy buying specific sofa sets or coffee tables, but if you take the time to follow some of these simple rules, you'll be surprised how good the living room will feel.

People would widely view wind chimes as an entirely aesthetic decorative object, predominantly displayed in gardens and patios. Archaeological evidence has shown early chimes in South East Asia, and carbon dating techniques have been used to estimate their age to somewhere as far back as 3000 BC, which speaks as a testament to just how important these items are to our human heritage. It has also been theorized that farmers would use chimes in lieu of scarecrows to keep birds away from their crops.
The idea of chimes working as a ward against evil spirits and in unison attract positive spirits has been prevalent throughout east-Asian history. In the year 1100 BC, the Chinese were documented making a wind bell named the feng-ling, hung and used throughout spiritually significant sites, this is still in practice in many temples across China today, there has even been superstitions as to certain chimes being cursed and attracting evil spirits. This superstition fueled the proliferation of wind chimes throughout the far east, and of course the market expanded massively.
Wind Chimes have only been seen in the western world from the 1800s onwards as a cultural export from China. It slowly became a trend to keep such items in homes opposed to places of worship. Feng-Shui, which is the Chinese system of aesthetics, increased the popularity of these items as they were thought to create a calm and relaxing atmosphere in the surrounding area.
The rich history of the chime spans from western to eastern cultures and is one of the oldest decorative objects known to be used by mankind. We all have favorite colors. Colors that make us feel good...colors we find attractive. In the advertising world, red is used frequently because people don't ignore this color. "Hot" colors are used in ads and commercial packaging often because they make people feel warm and it moves them to action. Red can actually raise the blood pressure. It is the color of blood, war, life, birth, love and romance. We don't ignore red fire engines, red outfits or sexy red lips. Red cars get more tickets not only because they are easier to spot on the highway, but because the red color "revs" up the driver too. In Feng Shui tradition, red is used in the marriage bedroom often to stimulate the couple to make a baby quicker.
Color is light energy. There are many wavelengths that affect us, but are unseen, like infrared and ultraviolet, but we can feel their heat. The visible wavelengths (rainbow) colors affect us too. NASA discovered that the red wavelength, when isolated and used on human skin speeds healing and stimulates collagen production. The body absorbs the red wavelength faster than any other and estheticians are trained to hold red L.E.D. lights further away from the body than the other colors because of this characteristic.
In traditional Feng Shui practice, red is such a strong color that we actually can use it as one of the elemental remedies. In traditional compass school we use the Chinese 5-element system to balance a home's energy. Red is commonly used as a fire remedy and is safer than actual fire and very effective, especially the brighter shades. Fire is considered an active "yang" energy and is useful in many areas in a home energy-wise. Many shades of red will work, like burgundy, bright oranges and pinks and red-purples, which are all considered "fire" colors. But a large span of traditional "true" red will have the best effect.
When a home is analyzed for Feng Shui, we usually suggest to someone not to decorate with permanent reds like painted walls or wall paper, red carpets or sofas. Instead, we recommend that you use smaller throw rugs, red paintings (that can be moved), pillows or smaller decorative items that are mobile, as the energies shift yearly. Certain home areas can benefit greatly from the addition of reds, as this color can protect and ease health issues, especially bone problems or arthritis. Reds can also promote wealth when we are boosting the "wang NE earth" energy. But reds in the wrong areas of the home can also promote illness or accidents and these can be subtle to severe depending on the timing and how often you use the area. Feng Shui: an Introduction
Understand Feng Shui at even a basic level and begin to organise your environment accordingly and you will soon start seeing positive results. Feng Shui is extensively used in both homes and offices all over the world, particularly in China and South East Asia (and increasingly in the West) because of this.
Feng Shui offers a variety of 'cures' and remedies to improve your life. The Feng Shui use of aquariums, water features and crystals can attract prosperity into your life. Appropriate use of colors, materials and objects according to Feng Shui principles, can improve the energy flow in your home or office, encouraging healthy activity and improved fortune generally.
This is achieved by re-arranging and re-ordering the contents, decoration and placement of objects within living spaces appropriately, according to Feng Shui Principles, in harmony with the 5 Elements. As these comprise (in varying blends) all matter in the universe, this would imply living in harmony and 'in tune' with the natural flow of universal energies.
These energies change in a long-known, predictable, endlessly repeating pattern (the 10-year Cycle of the 5 Elements is the key to this). Consequently, tremendous wisdom has accumulated over millennia (especially in China) about the practicalities of harmonising with these, known as the Principles of Feng Shui. These Principles, too, are becoming increasingly well-known in the West.
Interior
You can apply these Principles to your choice of home location, garden-layout and most famously to your house, flat or room's interior. This is where the 5 Elements come in. The interior of dwellings contains furniture and objects directly linked to these. Similarly, their colours and of the interior's decoration in general (including paint-work, carpets, curtains, and wall-paper) can be related to the 5 Elements and organised to facilitate a beneficial and healthy Qi-flow throughout.
The 5 Elements and Their Locations, Directions and Associations
Water is Associated with the North-West Sector of Rooms and Dwellings and the Black Warrior
Objects and motifs for design and placement include: glass, stained glass, crystal, aquaria, seascapes (especially pastels and watercolours) roads, lakes, and waterfalls. Shapes: serpentine and wavy. Water also symbolises wealth. Colours: blue and black.
Wood is Associated with the East and South-East Sectors of Rooms and Dwellings and the Green Dragon
Objects and motifs for design and placement include: Chinese (not Western) dragons, flowers, plants, trees, wood furniture, wood-crafts, wicker chairs, rattan mats, cloth, paper, and paintings depicting nature. Shapes: cylindrical and rectangular. Colours: green and brown.
Fire is Associated With the South Sector of Rooms and Dwellings and the Red Bird
Objects and motifs for design and placement include: candles, lamps, incense, heating appliances, fireplaces, stoves, sun-bursts and Sun images generally, animals, birds, children, wool, leather goods, feathers; pictures of fire, people and animals. Shapes: triangular and sharp-edged shapes. Colour: red.
Earth is Associated With the North-East, South West and Centre of Rooms and Dwellings
Whilst the other four Elements have animal associations (linked to Exterior Feng Shui, which follows) Earth has none as it represents the vacant living-space occupied by the Feng Shui practitioner.
Objects and motifs for design and placement include: ceramics, bricks, crystal, porcelain, glazed tiles, stones, sculptures, globes, and pictures of mountains, cliffs, and deserts. Shape: square. Colours: yellow, beige terracotta and ochre.
Metal is Associated With the North-West and West of Dwellings and the White Tiger
Objects and motifs for design and placement include: metal objects, mirrors, quartz crystals and diamonds, bells, coins/money, swords, jewelry made of precious metals, pictures of metal objects. Shapes: oval and round. Colours: white, silver, gold, bronze and grey.
Overall
1. Mirrors, classed as Yin Metal, intensify the effect, positive or negative of whatever they reflect (better flowers in the garden than the loo).
2. Good feng shui design avoids dark spots in interiors as these impede the flow of Qi.
3. Couches and chairs should allows those seated to see the door and note peoples entries and exits.
4. Beds should not be at right-angles to or face the bed-room door. Ideally there should be a wall at one side for protection.
The above details provide general guidance according to the Compass and Form Schools of Feng Shui. As the name suggests, a simple compass is a necessary tool to aid you in your endeavours and allow you to identify the eight sectors. Single, room-at-a-time, approaches and more ambitious whole-floor or house ones are equally viable, as long as you are consistent.
Exterior Feng Shui
Feng Shui Principles are and always have been an important, even integral, feature in the design, construction and location of buildings in China. This has not been the case in the West, however.
Nevertheless, should you be in process of changing your location, you could consider these features when evaluating or comparing potential sites.
1. The South and Fire.
Ideally the main living/working area and entrance should face South. This is the location of the 'Red Bird', the Sun at its mid-day height and the direction of maximum light and warmth.
Large picture-windows and an unobstructed Southern aspect can help produce a welcoming 'Ming Tang' or 'Bright Hall' effect.
2.North and Water
The intriguing composite symbol comprising a snake coiled around a tortoise called the 'Black Warrior' represents Feng Shui ideals in this direction. Cold Northerly winds emanate from here and steep hills behind you, providing shelter (the tortoise) can make a real difference especially in Winter. Such features still provide the fresh-water streams (the snake) filling our modern reservoirs. Here is the ideal location for ponds, pools and exterior water-features generally.
North-facing windows and doors should be much smaller to reduce the effects of such inclement weather.
3.West and Metal
Lower, more gently rising hills here help shelter buildings from the 'White Tiger' the powerful Westerlies sweeping in (in the case of the U.K) from the Atlantic Ocean and (in China) from the Himalayas.
This can be an ideal location for out-buildings and garages.
4.East and Wood
Some more hills, slightly higher than those in the West, covered with growing things, represents an ideal Green Dragon location.
Keen gardeners take note!
Poison-Arrows
There are no straight-lines in nature, human-beings alone produce these. Natural Qi-flow can be held-back, trapped or caused to rush through locations designed without thought of its existence and filled with angular shapes. Such irregular Qi-flow can bring invisible and mysterious ill-health and misfortune to individuals unaware of its potential to do so.
Triangular, and arrow-head shaped protrusions, in particular, pointed at buildings can affect inhabitants adversely via the turbulence in Qi-flow they produce directly opposite. Such locations should be studiously avoided. Counter-measures (like planting a high-hedge or erecting a fence) are essential otherwise.
Overall
1. Avoid spots facing 'T' junctions or locations on the outside of sharp bends to prevent unwanted incursions of traffic.
2. Street-lights outside bedroom windows can lead to sleepless nights.
3. Deciduous trees present a skeletal, spectral appearance outside windows for half the year--Conifers and ever-greens are to be preferred.
4. Water is Year Element in both 2012-13 and 2014-15 for Feng Shui purposes.

The Real Feng Shui New Year

Much to my surprise, I have discovered more than one famous author or personality who has incorrectly perpetuated the wrong Feng Shui New Year date. Contrary to popular belief, the correct New Year is based on a Solar calendar, not the Lunar calendar.
The Lunar calendar vacillates from year to year by weeks, sometimes occurring at the end of January and sometimes in February. Enthusiasts sometime assume that the New Year will begin according to the Lunar calendar, but there is no excuse for a professional to get this wrong.
There is one form of Chinese Astrology called Zi Wei Dou Shu, which adheres to the lunar calendar. But even the more popular BaZi (Four Pillars of Destiny) Astrology uses the Solar calendar as well. The Chinese solar calendar begins on February 4th or 5th each year, not vacillating by more than a day and calculated down to the minute. This date represents the exact mid-way point between the December Solstice and the March Equinox. February 4th/5th marks a specific date when the Sun and Earth are at a precise distance from each other. And this is true for both the Northern and Southern Hemisphere.
When one gains a better understanding of Yin-Yang Theory, The Trigrams, astronomy and Chinese cosmology as it relates to Feng Shui, then it is understood that the solar calendar has to be used. Most classical teachers will announce very early on in their classes that the New Year begins on February 4th/5th, but some Feng Shui celebrities who do not understand the crucial aspect of timing and Xuan Kong Flying Star School will assume that any reference to the new year has to be the lunar cycle.
The solar calendar is also referred to for monthly cycles and for longer cycles like the 20 Year Eras. For example, we are currently living in a time called Period 8. It began on February 4th 2004 and will continue until February 4rd, 2024.
Chinese, Japanese, and other Asian cultures like to celebrate the Lunar New Year with great festivities. But how do we appropriately celebrate a Feng Shui New year? Most people who are aware of the significance are either trying to figure out on their own or consulting with a professional regarding what kinds of changes they may need to make to their home or business just before or on February 4th. It ends up being more of a time to plan and execute some adjustments to our living or work space than any kind of party or ceremony.
In any given year, typical adjustments to a house could involve the use of water, wood, fire, earth and metal. Because of annual influences, beginning on February 4th/5th, someone might need to change an element from one location to the next. The precise directions within a floor plan have to be determined using a to-scale floor plan and an accurate compass reading.
Let us speak generally about the direction of North. The North sector spans from 337.5 degrees to 22.5 degrees, relative to the center of a floor plan. In 2011, there was annual energy residing in the North which for anyone could invite legal problems, gossip, or contractual disputes. The range of course could be vast, from something as minor as a parking ticket to something serious like an IRS audit or worse. During 2011, this particular energy, written in code as the "3 wood star", could be weakened with the presence of the fire element. There are a number of ways to represent fire, inconspicuously, such as with boldly red art work, red d�cor items and accent lighting.
Come February 4th 2012, we'll have a very different type of annual influence in the North sector which would usually not do well in the company of fire. Instead, the element of metal would be more appropriate in the North location for 2012. And yet, more than just annual influences are compared in any given direction. We have what I call "permanent" flying stars which have to be taken into consideration as well, along with who is using the area and for what function.
If you want to make a new year's resolution, you can attempt to start January 1st as so many people do. But in reality, February 4th has greater potency to assist you in initiating your resolutions. February 4th is when Earth embarks on a whole new relationship with the Sun and it is when people experience a much bigger shift personally and professionally. In fact, for some people the month of January feels like a long hang over from the holiday season, but by February we are better equipped to start manifesting our yearly goals.

Home Fragrances Improve Mood and Create a Tranquil Environment

Numerous studies have been conducted by scientists and psychologists to correlate the role sensory input plays in determining mood and overall feelings of wellbeing. These studies continue to hone in the power of scent and how fragrance can impact the way a person feels.
For example, the scent of lavender, whether it's sprayed in a perfume or burned as an oil, evokes feelings of calm and tranquility. People that struggle with sleep disorders or have difficulty relaxing at night can benefit from burning lavender candles at night or rubbing lavender oils on certain trigger points.
Scents featuring anything with citrus tend to awaken the scenes and heighten energy levels. If you have trouble waking up in the morning, why not spray an orange-scented perfume in your bathroom and kitchen as you wake up and start your day with breakfast?
If you're struggling to curb a sweet tooth or are under a lot of stress, vanilla or caramel-scented oils are perfect to burn. During the spring, the time of year when ideas are flowing and flowers are in full bloom, go for anything floral - soft lilac, hyacinth, orchid, water lily, or rose hips. These scents will help foster creativity and get you moving outdoors, where the sun is shining and the temperatures are getting warm enough for an invigorating walk through the park.
During the summer months, go for something fruity and light, such as passion fruit, sun ripened raspberry, strawberry kiwi, or pear blossom. A quick couple of quick spritzes throughout your home will keep it smelling nice and fresh without being overbearing, especially when there's a lot of humidity in the air. Feng Shui and Clearing Your Clutter or Not

Clearing your clutter has become such a big topic in Feng Shui. Years ago as a new Feng Shui consultant I liked that this concept it was clear and not confusing. Clear it out is the message. If you haven't used it in a year or don't love it then move it out and give it to someone who will use it. I however am becoming cautious about this advice.
Years ago I was in a friend's kitchen. I was a new consultant and she asked me about the Feng Shui of her kitchen. I told her what every book and all my training had to say. It was originally her husband's bachelor pad and it had stickers and license plates on every surface. There was no place to rest the eye. I said to do some clutter clearing.
Years later I was in her kitchen. I had done a lot of meditation work and Inner Space Techniques. In fact, I became an Inner Space Techniques Practitioner. I tuned into her kitchen as I was having tea and felt so grateful she did not head my beginner advice. Her kitchen felt marvelous. Yes, it was cluttered but it landed a warm and personal space.
I learned this again with another friend. I went to her home and it was very minimal. It was orderly and nice. A year later I went back for a visit and it was a shocking difference. It was gorgeous. The change was she had a boyfriend who went through her storage space and rearranged her house with treasures that she did not think much of until he had arranged them. He hung pictures of her and her children that had been hiding in photo albums. He blew them up, cropped them and colored them. He pulled up old chairs, an old couch, old lamps and voila. He created an absolutely beautiful space.
Since then I have learned that clearing clutter is an art. That said, I was in a naturopath's office the other day and met a fellow patient. I could feel how the patient's clutter was impacting his energetic body. It felt very serious in fact. I wondered what kind of treasures he had in his home that could be put to better use. Displayed, moved out and used to create a healthy Feng Shui space for him to thrive in versus the sickly stuffed space he lived in. What Is Yin House Feng Shui?

In popular culture, many people are vaguely familiar with the Yin-Yang Symbol and some of its attributes, such as the yin darker side of the symbol relating to the feminine principle and the yang lighter side of the symbol relating to the masculine principle.
In virtually all schools of Feng Shui, there is exploration into the many manifestations of yin and yang aspects to our lives and surroundings. All of Chinese metaphysics and Chinese medicine relate to Yin-Yang Theory uniquely, with a lot of overlapping observations and conclusions.
Within the field of Feng Shui, we can label spaces that are dark, damp, quiet, cold and still as yin. We can also make a comparison of yang attributes to spaces that are bright, dry, noisy and hot. And one of the goals in balancing an environment is to make sure the spaces are not excessively yin or yang.
It might be a logical deduction that a "yin house" is a house that has excessive yin traits. And yet, the name "Yin House" refers specifically to a branch of Feng Shui that deals exclusively with the most yin environment of all: grave sites. This is just as ancient a practice in the area of Feng Shui as "Yang House" which deals with spaces for the living.
Yin House has its own set of rules and guidelines for diagnosing a grave site, and a practitioner cannot even begin to understand the implications of a grave site (on up to three generations of descendants) unless they have a working knowledge of classical Feng Shui. This includes Xuan Kong and Form School at the very least.
Based on the orientation of the grave and when the body is placed there, a Yin House is created that can affect the health, well-being, and fortunes of children, grand children and great-grandchildren of the deceased. The energy transmission will go from parent to child and not from sibling to sibling or spouse to spouse. Of course, your spouse's yin house will affect children that you mutually share so there can be an indirect influence.
Yin House Theory maintains that the ground below can act as a conduit for energy to be passed, through the bones of the deceased, from the grave site to their living relatives. But many of the principles for what constitutes a good yin house are not necessarily obvious or known without training. For example, a grave site is about as yin as you can get, death resides there. One might think that it is a lovely choice to have a plot under a shady tree in the cemetery. And yet, that would only make the grave site even more yin.
The goal is to bring a little more yang energy to the area, so a plot right out in the open space, receiving plenty of light is actually the better choice. Those kinds of principles are easy to grasp and plan for. What is not so easy is planning for the time when a person will actually "move in" to their yin house. Just like Yang House, using the Xuan Kong methodology where houses are created within 20 Year eras, you can plan to occupy a plot in a certain direction and in a certain time frame, but unless one knows what year they will die, there could be some problems in long range planning.
In many cultures, whole families will be laid to rest in one big family plot. In this case, the choices are greatly diminished as the orientation is mostly fixed. For example, grand pa could have been laid to rest in 1974 (Period 6), while dad was laid to rest along side in 2004 (Period 8) and space left for the next generation, without knowing what Period it will end up being. These time frames alone can make the difference between a good yin house and a bad yin house and how it may effect future generations. Obviously, the study and observation of this branch of Feng Shui spans over many decades, compared to the Yang House feedback which can be immediate.
Yin House has many aspects to consider including the larger environment of the cemetery, the road courses within the cemetery, the land quality and land levels, nearby natural features such as mountains or water, the orientation of the plot, and even whether the head stone is placed flat on the ground or positioned upward, perpendicular to the ground. The birth year of the person to be laid to rest is also factored into the calculation for the best possible grave site and no doubt this type of service is requested with very little advance notice some of the time. As well, questions inevitably come up regarding cremation and whether or not there is any influence from ashes, be they buried, stored or dispersed.

Does Feng Shui Really Work?

It's so funny. You'd think after doing this work for twenty years my answer to that question would be an unequivocal, "Yes! Of course it works!" But once in a while the Universe gives me a lesson to remind me first-hand that when feng shui is applied to a space correctly, it does indeed free up the energy that brings positive changes into our lives. Yes indeed, even the "Feng Shui Lady" needs a lesson from time to time. Here are two stories I'm going to tell on myself and my own personal experiences with feng shui in my own home.
A while back I got a bouncing, barking, baby puppy. He was so cute and at the same time so much work. Just like any baby, my puppy went through a chewing stage. Anything he could sink his little chompers into was fair game for a chew toy. Because of his prolific chewing activities, I decided that the electrical cords in one particular area of my home posed a potential deadly threat to my ever-curious puppy. To protect him I put a metal "puppy gate" around the area where the majority of the cords were. When I did that I didn't stop to think about what "feng shui area" this part of the house was. I just plopped the puppy gate down and forgot about it.
A couple of months passed. My time had been consumed with taking care of my very active puppy and putting the final touches on my book before it went to press. During this time I noticed that my income started declining. Yes I know all about the current state of the economy, but this was different. This was an unusual dip in finances that was starting to move past a "dip" and was becoming more of a canyon. I started getting worried. Then I thought, "If I were my client, what would I tell myself?" The answer was, "Look at the southeast (wealth) sector and see if anything is going on there that shouldn't be." My wealth sector happens to fall in the exact location where I had placed the puppy gate a couple of months ago (around the same time my finances became stressed.) You see, growing wood (i.e. a healthy plant) is the needed element for the southeast meridian. In the Chinese 5 Element Cycle, Metal (the puppy gate) energetically destroys the needed element (wood). When I realized that I had placed the metal gate in the area where metal was the worst element, I removed it immediately (luckily the puppy was past his chewing stage by then). Sure enough, within a week finances began to improve and in a couple of weeks were back to where they were before the " Puppy Gate Incident".
The next story I'm going to tell on myself is similar to the one I just mentioned, only this time it has to do with the north (career) sector. My career sector (the north meridian) falls exactly in my guest bathroom, which is fine, because water is the main element for career energy. In feng shui, when we add water to an area we need to make sure the water is circulating. This is why a table top fountain is so ideal in the north. That said, for almost ten years my live-in boyfriend used that bathroom as "his" bathroom. The daily use of that bathroom kept the water circulating and there was no need for a fountain. During that time my career had really taken off. I had more appointments than I could book, starred in a television series, and had risen to the top of my field. Then three years ago we came to the decision to go our separate ways. He moved out and the guest bathroom went back to being a guest bathroom and was only used very occasionally. Truth be told, during that time my career had begun to stall. Big contracts were fewer and farther between, class sizes got smaller and the frequency of my appointments went from sometimes up to three in a day to sometimes three in a week. I blamed it on the economy and kept plugging away, "hoping" it would get better.
Finally (I'm a bit slow on the uptake sometimes), like the incident with the puppy gate, I decided to look at my home the way I would with a client. Was there anything amiss in my career area that I had overlooked or unthinkingly changed? Then it dawned on me. My career started slowing down shortly after my boyfriend moved out. The guest bathroom went from being used every day to being used maybe once a week. As a result, the water in that area became stagnant instead of circulating. A lightbulb went on in my head. (DUH!) I needed to put a fountain in that bathroom as soon as possible. Guess what? Within two weeks after I put the fountain in that bathroom, my career went into the stratosphere! Suddenly my appointment book was full, big contracts were once again flowing in, and I was back to where I was three years before. If only this had dawned on me sooner!
I know what you're thinking...the "Feng Shui Lady" should have known this all along, but the truth of the matter is that we all get used to the way our houses are. We place something (or remove something) without thinking of its impact on the overall energy of the feng shui our home. I also think there is a deeper meaning here. In order for me to be able to help my clients, I MUST know that what I do has truth and validity. My experiences in my own life and in my own home are true testimonies to the power of feng shui!

Feng shui invaded the Western world like wild fire decades ago. Volumes of books were printed, experts were coming out everywhere. It is an ancient art of placement. It is not a cure-all that will magically rid your environment of all negative energies, solve relationship conflicts, find the ideal career path, cure financial difficulties and bring to reality dashed hopes and dreams.
I am guilty of clutter- when I first heard of feng shui, my space was a big disappointment. All I can see was clutter, clutter and more clutter everywhere. I bought a book, some relatives and friends added to my growing collection of materials, books and cd's to boot and the internet. Armed with the tools and new knowledge about this magical art of placement, I tackled the ambitious endeavor of de-cluttering... the first step to apply this precious new tool to my life and home.
Years later, my space went through a major re-arrangement, which in truth was just moving " clutter" from one direction to another. Remember, armed with a compass, I re-discovered the role of the 4 Elements, Earth, Water, Fire and Air( feng shui has a 5th- metal). I familiarized myself with the areas of life that this new magical tool deals with. My common sense told me that I could not tackle all the areas at once. BUT- an expert would run you through these in one consultation session, if you are being cheap. I've heard this from people I know who enlightened them with the tools they needed to improve their life, their home environment and bring them career and financial success. But, sad truth, nothing changed- life, home,career,finances and relationships pulsated away as usual.
Into the 21st century, feng shui still is written about, there are new disciples and gurus. There are numerous sites on the web and volumes of books on this topic. There is a compass direction for the areas of life, relationships, career,finance, travel, children etc.- depends on which school of feng shui is at work.
What I fail to notice is the analysis of the who and what is the person like? The financial area can be analyzed, complete with the props feng shui recommends for that area. But- what is the attitude of this person towards his/her career. Is there evidence of smart money management- like no maxed out credit cards, does not subscribe to retail therapy, lives within their financial means. Or is there a preference for the good life with a taste for high-end goods, living beyond their means?
Does the person exude positive energy? It is difficult to apply the principles of feng shui to one with a negative attitude, or is a skeptic. The intention to apply this in one's life has to be genuine. This art does not just address the material and physical needs. It deals with balance- the elements within one's space has to be balanced and in harmony. Too much fire in the bedroom or relationship area can encourage love or passion, but, it can also bring conflict. Do you believe in balance- that moderation is an important aspect of life? Can you look deep inside and deal with your demons? We all have them.
There is a spiritual side to feng shui. It encourages one to see beyond the physical and material world. It raises awareness to forces outside and beyond this physical world. How often is this aspect written about? Applying this ancient art to one's life means a dedication and a commitment. Keeping the harmony in your space is an on-going endeavor. It is about showing respect to one's space, honor it by keeping it reasonably tidy. You may have all the elements balanced, but it is more important that you believe in balance in all areas of your life, that you are at peace and in harmony with the world around you. What is the point to applying this art of placement to your space if you are a workaholic and you are never home?
Feng shui is not a cure-all. Any undertaking in this life starts with the person, goes deep into the core of one's being. It can help hone the good qualities in a person, perhaps awaken these in a skeptic or a negative person. Ultimately, the goal is that positive energy will radiate around the home, in every nook and cranny with the right intention and attitude.

Add Feng Shui coins, a Three-Legged Toad, some fake Gold, Pyrites or Citrine, enhanced, if possible, with some quartz crystals! The North West Wealth Sector of rooms and dwellings is the obvious display-location. Dragons can also be placed in the East.
Things to avoid? Dragon Years can be extremely volatile and Water the Year Element can represent the Emotions as well as Wealth. An element of caution needs to be built into your wealth-seeking this year,to ensure you don't get carried away by Dragon Year energies and events.

I've talked quite a bit about bedrooms in the past and how important they are. Your bedroom is the room that is closest to you and has the biggest impact on you and all areas of your life. It has a very big impact on your health and energy, and it reflects your level of comfort and satisfaction with yourself and your life.
It is important that you love your bedroom and everything in it and that it is kept clutter free. There are many other aspects of your bedroom that you may not have considered but they are very important, so I'd like to cover a few of them here.
Books in the bedroom - many people like to read before they go to sleep. I certainly do. But it's also a good idea to really consider what types of books you're reading before you go to bed. Each book has different energy attached to it, such as the subject matter and even the energy of the author. I've said before that everything is alive with energy, and that includes books.
Be careful about reading books that are about violence, tragedies or have sad endings. They can affect your sleep or even, on a deep sub-conscious level, begin to affect your health or your relationships.
It's not a good idea to keep too many books in the bedroom. Just have the one that you're currently reading, or one that you like to refer to. A bookcase full of books in the bedroom brings too much energy to a space that needs to be calm.
Don't treat it as an office or exercise room - the energy of the bedroom is about sleep and it's about relationships - your romantic relationship, as well as your relationship with yourself. It is your most personal space and the energy should be very calm and it should represent your relationship (or the one you'd like to have). When you bring in the energy of work and/or exercise you are bringing in energy that is very active, which will interfere with your sleep, your health,, your relationship and your life generally. It can very quickly create a sense of overwhelm.
There is also a lot of stress that can be associated both with work and with exercise. With work, you may feel as though you can never 'switch off.' You always have work on your mind - of course you will if you don't have a personal space where you can detach from it. You are bringing in your work energy - the energy of your day at work - into your bedroom. This is a recipe for even higher levels of stress.
As far as exercise is concerned, again, this is very active and not the right energy for a bedroom. It is often something that you feel you 'have' to do, rather than want to do (pressure). It may even be something that you feel you 'should' be doing but are not, in which case you are being surrounded with the energy of guilt and even failure.
Don't overdo the furniture - you'll want to have plenty of space around the bed and to make sure that you don't have too much furniture in the room. Allow the energy in the room to circulate freely (including underneath the bed). Allow the room to breathe. If you like big, heavy, dark furniture, make sure the room is an appropriate size to accommodate it. You don't want the room to feel crowded or overwhelmed with furniture. Overall, you don't want your bedroom to be too dark (except at night when you turn the lights off).
Generally speaking, lighter woods and other natural materials are best for beds and bedroom furniture. Avoid metal beds because they can conduct electro-magnetic fields.
Think about where the furniture came from as well. If it was given to you by somebody else, or is left over from a previous relationship, think about the energy that it is carrying related to that person and your relationship with them. Is that energy positive and supportive? If not, you'll want to consider replacing it when you can.
These are just a few simple tips that can help you turn your bedroom into a personal sanctuary that supports you in all ways.

Feng Shui and Real Estate Disclosures

Standing on the curb with my client and his real estate agent, we were all discussing the house he was interested in buying. Out of nowhere, a woman came dashing across the street and she obviously knew we had just viewed the property we were standing in front of. She then blurted out, "Just want you to know that anyone who lives there WILL get harassed and sued by the neighbor next door." She then ran back into her house. For whatever reason, she was compelled to tell us and at that point my client said, "Let's get out of here; I already have enough legal problems."
If you have bought or sold property you will be familiar with disclosure laws or "surprises" that can be realized after purchase. Even I once lived on a street where a crazy elderly lady regularly threatened and sued the neighbors on either side of her house. This unassuming grandmother also slashed tires and poisoned neighborhood pets. The rap sheet on her got so thick that anyone living next door who put their house up for sale (often), actually had to disclose to prospective buyers that this person would likely cause them trouble. The disturbed woman eventually had to do community service and I think she was also court ordered to get mental health services.
But what about problems not disclosed? One of my clients only realized after she bought her condo that the main security gate for the underground parking garage was right under her unit, opening and closing a hundred times a day. Another client found out from fellow tenants, after signing a lease that a freight train rumbles by the building between 3 and 6 a.m. every morning.
In a Feng Shui analysis, we are not psychics, so if there is an objectionable noise or smell or something else offensive happening on a regular basis, we won't necessarily be aware of it, if it doesn't happen while we're doing an assessment. Checking out the exterior environment thoroughly before you buy or lease is critical because there can be circumstances you might not be able to change at all. Living near an airport? A fire station? An auto-mechanic shop? Try your best to make sure you won't be bombarded by obnoxious sounds, smells, or views.
Other things happen beyond our control after moving in. More than once I've had a client consider moving when a neighbor added on a second story that either blocked a great view or even cast a chronic shadow on their house, making it too dark in a room frequently used.
These disappointments are not necessarily omens for more troubles to come; they are just annoying on a mundane level and it can certainly be viewed as a Feng Shui problem if chronic or severe. In a classical Feng Shui analysis, we can tell if an occupant may encounter legal problems, although hardly can we be so specific to predict that the legal problems would come from a neighbor.
Usually a home inspection will reveal a number of flaws that can translate into Feng Shui problems if they are not attended to, such as asbestos, plumbing, electrical or roof problems. Whenever there is something in ill-repair, there can be a correlation on a metaphysical level. For example, if the foundation is cracked in the northwest sector of the house, this could indicate problems for the father in the house or also create head or lung problems for any of the family members. If there is a serious plumbing problem, it could affect the occupants' digestion or urinary tract. When someone is just renting, they may not be given the same rights as a buyer to find out about flaws in or around the home.
One of the more serious disclosures, recognized by the real estate industry, is telling a prospective buyer when there has been a violent death on the premises. This disclosure must be relayed if it happened within three years of selling the property. I happen to have a neighbor who may or may not know that a man killed his wife in her house because it happened about 5 years before she bought and the disclosure clause had expired. Lingering "yin" energies and even hauntings can result from violent deaths on a property.

The Mysteries of Water in Feng Shui

Much has been written about water in the scope of Feng Shui influences and yet the specific applications for water still elude the general public. This is because we have many theories in the Xuan Kong Flying Star School which need to be learned through actual training. Otherwise, someone might assume that a water feature, like a fountain or pond, is always a good asset to a property, which is actually not the case. In fact, someone could innocently place a water feature in an area that could attract crime or reduce the occupant's financial potential.
Every twenty Year Era as defined by the Xuan Kong School, has both ideal as well as worst placement for water for both the interiors and exteriors. The current 20 Year Era known as Period 8 started in 2004. The previous Era, Period 7, started in 1984 and the one before that started in 1964. We have 9 Eras, each lasting 20 years and then they repeat perpetually. This is why if you read a book or article that says something generic like "water in the north is good," this is clearly erroneous. It might be true some of the time for some of the people, but not all of the people all of the time. This very article was inspired by a client asking for advice on where to place a pool that will be a safe and good area for the next thirty plus years.
In the classical schools we also have water placement formulas just based on the orientation of a house, such as the "Castle Gate" formulas, although I would personally never ignore factors which have to do with the age of the house. Sometimes that cancels out another place to put water on a property. Some practitioners, who have had next to no classical training, believe that placing water in the north sector of a house is appropriate. This could be because the direction of north is inherently associated with water. But this is less than half the story. In the "Pre-Heaven Sequence" of the trigrams, the Lo Shu, the direction of North is associated with the Kun trigram, which is an "earth" trigram as opposed to the Kan trigram which is related to water.
This simplified way of looking at the symbolism of the trigrams has not even considered the annual influences involved. For example, in the year 2011 the annual influence in the north is the visiting 3 star, related to gossip and legal problems. Adding water to the north in 2011 could exacerbate this situation. That same annual 3 will move over to the southwest in 2012.
As a long time consultant, I would like the public to know that Feng Shui has many wonderful things to offer people, but in the same way that a lay-person could cause themselves harm by self-medicating, self-diagnosing, or relying on generalities, they could be seriously taken down the wrong path.
Another piece of information that is relevant could be the birth date of the occupant. Each person has a direction that is for them, personally, a bad location for water to come towards their house. The "Yang Ren" direction can cause harm to an occupant. For example, a person born in a year that ends in a 7 (1947, 1957, 1967, 1977) should not have water outside their house in the Sheep-Wei direction.
This is another related topic in terms of the direction in which water flows. Water can flow towards or away from a property. Infinity pools give the impression that water is leaving or moving away from a house. So even though they look cool, they may not provide the most supportive Feng Shui. Many ordinary fountain pumps will simply push water up from a lower level and then the water will cascade down several tiers. This movement of water going up and then down is usually harmless.
As you may have heard or read, the very word "shui" translates as water. It is one of the five elements used routinely in a Feng Shui assessment to help balance the energies of that local area. For instance, we could place water in a room to help reduce leg or back pain. We might use water in another context to help with business success. There are also applications of water use to help with relationships. So, water can be used, strategically for a variety of life issues, not just one area of concern.
Water needs to be clean and ideally circulating. Yin water is calm, still water and it could be too yin, causing health problems if it is stagnant or dirty. Yang water is very active water, and in balance with the environment can be fine as long as the water is not too yang. Out of control water could include hurricanes, tsunamis, and other water disasters. But even having a fountain that makes a harsh, unpleasing sound should be adjusted so that it does not have a chance to produce a negative response.
